This page is about the last Herald-mage, Vanyel Ashkevron. He is my absolute favorite character in all of Misty's books. And every other book I've ever read. And I read a lot, so that says something.

Vanyel is the coolest character I have ever read about. All of his struggles, and how he overcomes them...he was just amazing. His aunt, Herald-Mage Savil once said "He seems almost to attract bad luck." And he does. His father thinks he's tainted, his sibling hate him, and one of the only two people who love him unconditionally suicided, even though they were lifebonded. His friends die, one by one, until he is all alone...

I've always felt kind of sorry for Vanyel. He had a very hard life, and there was almost nothing to make it easier. His father, his siblings...it all adds up to create a life almost no one would want to live. But the only thing that Vanyel does live for, once he becomes a Herald, is his duty. He would live for his duty and die for his duty. But I think it's kind of ironic that the most powerful mage in Valdemar is gay, giving people one more thing to avoid him about. Most people, even Heralds, already avoid him because of his power, and he does not need more people avoiding him because he's gay. I will not spoil anything for you though, so if you want to know more, read the books!
