I've always felt kind of sorry for Vanyel. He had a very hard life, and there was almost nothing to make it easier. His father, his siblings...it all adds up to create a life almost no one would want to live. But the only thing that Vanyel does live for, once he becomes a Herald, is his duty. He would live for his duty and die for his duty. But I think it's kind of ironic that the most powerful mage in Valdemar is gay, giving people one more thing to avoid him about. Most people, even Heralds, already avoid him because of his power, and he does not need more people avoiding him because he's gay.
